Did you know there are at least 100 archives in the Nation’s Capital and surrounding area? I didn’t until I started working on a project to locate and describe them for Professor Jane Zhang at The Catholic University of America. The first 100 are now part of the National Capital Archives Map on the SAA@CUA blog.
While researching this project, I found out that access to Naval Archives is restricted not just because they don’t want to give away the Navy’s secrets, but because they are working to fix their storage facilities. I also learned that the Black Women’s History Archive needed to be moved because the environment was inadequate to appropriately house the collections. More about stories like these will be in future blog posts by members of the student chapter of the Society of American Archivists at the Catholic University of America.
